A Cree painter, Michael Lonechild was born in 1955 and raised on the White Bear First Nation in Southeastern Saskatchewan.
At an early age,
Michael developed an appreciation for the way of life of the people in the community, and these memories are reflected in his paintings.
In his work he captures the feelings of serenity and sentimentality that shroud the style of the days of the horse-drawn era. Many of the images include the essence with which the First Nations people understand the dual relationship of the spiritual and physical realm.
Another aspect of his work portrays people living off the land and their
relationship to it, compared to the imposing realities of the oil rigs on lands where his people once hunted.

Michael is a self-taught artist. He states “ My technique is what people call the overlapping style: I paint over and over the same area to build up the mood.” Michael’s work can be found in the Canadian Embassy in Washington D.C. as well as private collections and galleries throughout North America.
